GREENWICH VILLAGE, NY — Firefighters battled a major fire in a Bleecker Street building Monday, the FDNY said.

The blaze started in the basement of a 10-story building at 160 Bleecker St. about 9:54 a.m. on Monday, an FDNY spokesman told Patch. More than 100 firefighters were on scene battling the blaze shortly before the fire was declared under control at about 11:30 a.m.

No injuries were immediately reported to authorities.

The cause of the fire was still under investigation on Wednesday evening, an FDNY spokesman.

The blaze sent smoke billowing throughout the neighborhood, according to a tweet from the city's emergency notification system.
