METS HONOR BRAVEST WITH

NY Post

A rookie Brooklyn firefighter, who lost his firefighting dad on 9/11, has been tapped to throw out the first pitch at Shea Stadium on the third anniversary of the event that changed the nation, The Post had learned.

When Tommy Gies takes the mound on Saturday, the memory of Lt. Ronnie Gies, of Queens' Squad 288, will be with him — but Gies doesn't want to think about it when facing home plate.

"If I do, I'll bounce the ball 40 feet short," said Gies, whose Mets-loving dad coached his brothers, Ronnie, 19, and Bobby, 17, and him on the game.

Gies, 21, was valedictorian of his firefighting class last month.

"What we're trying to do on the 11th is to try to honor and pay respects to people like Tommy, who have done something positive and gone on with their lives," said team spokesman Jay Horowitz.
