Fire-union leaders are demanding an apology from Police Commissioner Ray Kelly after a cop with a history of fighting with the Bravest called them "amateurs" on national television.

On an episode of "NYPD 24/7," a seven-part documentary about the department airing Tuesdays on ABC, Emergency Services Unit Lt. Vic Hollifleld was being filmed at the scene of an accident.

He called the firefighters at the scene "amateurs at work - they'll learn," add?ing, "I'm sure with time and effort they'll get bet?ter. But in the meantime the public is suffering."

Firefighters union president Steve Cassidy called the comment "outrageous" and demanded an apology.

"Hollifield's conduct is a product of the environment Kelly has created," Cassidy said.

NYPD spokesman Paul Browne would only say that Hollifield's remarks were "inappropriate."

A civil suit charges that in 1999, Hollifield pushed a firefighter, injuring him and forcing him to retire.
