Firefighters evacuated 50 people from two apartment buildings in East Harlem around 1:30 p.m. yesterday after the back corner of an abandoned building between the two crumbled.

Bricks came tumbling down from as high as the third floor of the abandoned building, a five-story apartment house at 1723 Lexington Avenue, between 107th and 108th Streets.

"This is the effect of vibration on a 100-year-old building," Deputy Fire Chief James Manahan said.

He said the vibrations may have come from a work crew setting pilings for an apartment building being constructed behind the other buildings. To prevent further damage, that work was stopped and subway service on the Nos. 4, 5 and 6 lines was halted temporarily.

Last night, the Department of Buildings condemned the abandoned building and said it intended to demolish it by today. Those evacuated were relocated by the American Red Cross and will be allowed to return to their homes today, Deputy Chief Manahan said.
