A report on the exposure of workers and residents near ground zero to toxic dust and chemicals provided new details on health problems they face. The report, based on a study conducted by six research centers on behalf of federal and city government agencies, published in this month's issue of Environmental Health Perspectives, found that fragments of glass and pulverized cement, breathed first by firefighters and later by cleanup workers, had caused severe coughs and asthma. The report also said the exposure had increased the risk of mesothelioma, a type of cancer associated with inhaling asbestos
