Class of Firefighters Graduates in Queens

NY Sun

he city's newest class of firefighters graduated yesterday at a ceremony in Queens.

The 265 graduates, four of whom served in the military in Iraq, completed the department's new 18-week training program at Randall's Island, five weeks longer than in previous years.

"This year's additional training will only strengthen our ranks and better protect our newest members," Fire Commissioner Nicholas Scoppetta said at the ceremony.

The firefighters, who will be dispatched to battalions across the city, work under a probationary period during their first year of service, gaining first-hand experience from senior firefighters.
