Capsize Drama Off City Island

NY Post

by C.J. SULLIVAN

Rescuers fished out three men from the Long Island Sound near City Island after their motorboat hit rocks and capsized yesterday.

The men were cruising in their 30-foot craft near Stepping Stone Lighthouse, where boaters often fall victim to rocks just below the surface, officials said.

"They were smart enough to put on their life preservers as soon as they hit the rock," said FDNY rescuer James Sullivan.

Sullivan and partner Chris Fitzsimmons got the distress signal at 4:10 p.m. and arrived in nine minutes.

The operator of the boat said he didn't know that area was so dangerous.

"I go out there twice a week, and I didn't see any rocks," said the man, who declined to identify himself.
