Union President Defends FDNY Hiring Practices

NY 1

The city firefighters union is blasting a federal lawsuit that claims the fire department's written tests are unfair to black and Hispanic applicants.

The Department of Justice lawsuit claims the exams don't accurately gauge whether the minority applicants are qualified to be firefighters.

In response, Union President Steve Cassidy has filed an affidavit defending the tests.

Cassidy says the exams test for intelligence and mental skills that are necessary to do the job and that having lower standards could endanger lives.

The head of the Vulcan Society, which represents black firefighters, is calling Cassidy's comments, "racially insensitive.”

The city has launched a multi-million dollar minority recruiting campaign and created a new exam.
