New York -WABC Today there was a special graduation ceremony for a single probationary firefighter. Twenty-three year-old Peter Regan always dreamed about becoming a firefighter. But before he does that - he'll first face firefights in Iraq. That's because he's been called back into active duty as a U.S. Marine. Marcus Solis has the story. The bagpipes, the pomp and circumstance of a typical fire department graduation - but this one's different. There's just one honoree. Probationary firefighter Peter Regan's class graduates in March. But by then he'll be in Iraq serving as a Marine corporal, so the FDNY decided to send him off in style. Rescue 3 is where Peter's father was last assigned. Don Regan was killed on September 11th, and Peter says that made him more determined than ever to join the department. While on the wait list, he served four years active duty in the Marines. This will be his second tour in Iraq. For Rescue 3, today's graduation may be a welcome distraction. The Elite Unit lost seven men on 9/11, and two members remain hospitalized in critical condition after jumping from a fourth floor widow to escape a fire last month. Peter doesn't know how long he'll be in Iraq, but he knows what his assignment will be once he comes back: Ladder 174 in East Flatbush - another one of his father's old firehouses.
