Brownsville Fire Traps Two Residents

(CBS) BROOKLYN A mother and son are recovering after a fire broke out in their third floor apartment in Brownsville. Firefighters went in and rescued the pair just after eight o'clock Tuesday morning.

Forty to fifty firefighters responded to the fire at 348 Chester Street. When the call came in, Lieutenant Vic Spadaro and Firefighter John Drew learned people were trapped inside.

Lieutenant Vic Spadaro said, "We went in forced the door and went to the back bedroom."

In one room they found a man in his forties, in the other, an elderly woman. Firefighter John Drew told CBS 2, "She was unconscious and I dragged her to the front door."

Lieutenant Spadaro added, "The guy was in the other bedroom, I grabbed him and carried him out. They said he was coughing and stuff on the floor."

Deloris Dixson went to see her mother and brother in the hospital when she learned the news. "To see her just lying there now is kind of devastating, but the doctors say hopefully she is going to be alright."

Dixson says her 87-year old mother, Mary Patterson, has burns on her faces and suffered from smoke inhalation. "We got faith in God that he's going to pull her through so that's all we can do now."

Patterson's son, 48-year Floyd Patterson was also hospitalized at Brookdale hospital. According to family members, Floyd Patterson is the cousin of Floyd Patterson, the former world heavy weight boxing champion.

Tamara DaCruz who lives two apartment below had to be evacuated from the building with her family. "We just have to be gratedful it didn't happen to us, my family, and we can't take things like our lives our homes our apartments for granted."

Investigators are now trying to determine what caused the fire in the first place.
