(CBS)NEW YORK One person is dead after a six-story apartment building goes up in flames on the Upper West Side overnight. Fire officials confirmed that a resident of the six-story apartment building died in the early morning four-alarm fire. Nine other people were also seriously injured. The fire was still out of control early Thursday morning. In fact, one person was critically injured with burns over 90% of his body. A resident of the third floor apartment at 964 Amsterdam Avenue called in the fire just before 3:00 a.m. on Thursday morning. It was an incredibly smoky and fast-moving fire. More than 168 firefighters were on the scene using ladders to bring people to safety on the street away from the fire. At least one person jumped from the second floor and was not seriously injured. “I just smelled smoke. I got up and turned off the air conditioner and I realized that there was smoke coming into the room,” said resident Jen Pachuki. There were 24 apartments in the building and more than 50 people escaped using the fire escape. There is no word on the cause of this fire.
