Centennial Celebration
Charlotte Firefighters to Help Sandy Victims

Charlotte Observer - November 15, 2012

by Cleve R. Wootson Jr.

Members of Charlotte's fire department will head to New York on Thursday to help rebuild the homes of firefighters whose homes were damaged or destroyed by Hurricane Sandy. The firefighters bought supplies at Blackhawk Hardware on Park Road on Wednesday afternoon, and the volunteers will help repair the homes of members of FDNY Engine 217.

Some of the firefighters whose homes were damaged participated in the second annual 9-11 Memorial Stair Climb in October, where first responders and people in the community climbed 110 flights of stairs at the Wells Fargo Duke Energy Center in uptown.

The Charlotte firefighters are going to New York on their own time, and hope to fill a 52-foot trailer with supplies. They're also asking for donations from the public.
