(New York-AP) -- A protest banner hanging on the wall of a building near a Brooklyn fire station closed by the city has been taken down.
The banner showed Mayor Michael Bloomberg shooting a man in the back. It was hung on a building near Engine 212 in Williamsburg. Neighbors of the fire station said that police took the huge poster down, but the police say they did not.
Engine 212 was regarded as the 'People's Firehouse' for years until is was closed down earlier this year as part of citywide budget cuts. Artist Scott LoBaido says he will continue the fight to reopen the station.
Residents in the neighboring area have held 24-hour vigils since the Engine Company closed in May.
Witnesses said that the 16-by-26-foot banner was taken down at about 1:30 a.m. as a group of police officers stood by.
But police officials say they were only there to keep the peace.
