2 Dead In Bronx Blaze

WCBS 880

NEW YORK (AP) An overloaded extension cord is the suspected cause of an early morning fire Saturday that killed two brothers in their Bronx apartment building, officials said.

Firefighters were called to the apartment building at about 2:19 a.m. Saturday and found William Bergamy, 12, dead in the top bunk of his bunkbed in the smoke-filled, second-floor apartment. Reginal Bergamy, 5, was pronounced dead at Jacobi Medical Center, police said. A fire department spokeswoman said she did not know where in the apartment he had been found.

Reginal had been sleeping in his mother's bedroom. After thick smoke prevented her and the boys' grandfather from rescuing the 12-year-old, the two adults fled the apartment, mistakenly thinking Reginal was with them, police said.

The seven-story building is part of the 10-building Eastchester Gardens complex in the north Bronx.

The blaze was extinguished by 3:12 a.m. Seven firefighters suffered minor injuries.
