(New York-AP) -- The Bloomberg administration has sent a notice to the City Council and firefighters' unions announcing that six of the city's 478 firehouses will be closed within 45 days. Two more firehouses will lose engine companies but will stay open for other firefighting duties. The firefighters will be reassigned. The closures will save the city 10-point-eight (M) million dollars. They have generated protest rallies by firefighters and members of the public. The founder of the organization Keep N-Y-C's Firehouses Open says he's disappointed. Founder Adam Brecht said the group remains hopeful city officials will become open to a solution from the private sector. He says in living rooms and boardrooms across the city there's ample support to keep the firehouses open.
