NY 1 - January 20, 2012Former Office of Emergency Management Director Richard Sheirer, who helped lead the city in the aftermath of the September 11th attacks, has died.
Sheirer died while driving to work Thursday morning.
It's believed he suffered a heart attack.
Sheirer was named OEM director by Mayor Rudy Giuliani in 2000 and stayed in the position through March 2002.
He coordinated the recovery efforts at the World Trade Center site between dozens of city, state, and federal agencies.
Before that he worked for the fire department.
Flags at all city buildings will be lowered to half-staff in his honor.
Richard Sheirer was 65 years old.
