Brooklyn Fire Kills Boy, Injures Seven Other People

An early morning apartment fire in Brooklyn has killed a child and injures seven other people.

The New York City Fire Department says the flames started in the cockloft of a three-story building on Decatur Street in Bushwick shortly before 1:30 a.m. today.

It spread to surrounding buildings but firefighters were able to get the fire under control before 3 a.m.

Seven-year-old Joel Smith was found unconscious and was pronounced dead at the scene. It is not clear how he died.

One person was seriously hurt and six others suffered minor injuries.

There is no word yet on what caused the fire.
