SAFETY (& OTHER) INTERVIEWS OF UFA MEMBERS Interrogations or interviews by official representatives of the Fire Department shall be conducted while members are on duty. If it takes place while you are off duty, you shall be compensated by overtime. When you become a witness or a subject in anything that may lead to disciplinary action, you shall break off the interview by stating your contractual right to union and/or legal representation. Notify the UFA immediately! Once questioning by any representative of the fire commissioner seems to go beyond fire actions, you break it off by again citing your contractual provisions guaranteeing you proper representation. In a situation like this, it is most likely the representative is operating under orders from their superiors. Notify the UFA immediately! You DO NOT give ANY interviews to outside agencies unless you have previously conferred with your borough trustee as to representation and direction. You DO NOT give ANY interviews over the phone to anyone, including Fire Department personnel. You can never be certain of the identity of a person when speaking over the phone (as opposed to in person). Back To Top DEPARTMENT QUESTIONING OF FIRE SCENE OPERATIONS Certain fires and incidents have prompted Department officials to question companies who worked at the scene. Although these officials are claiming that they 'are not looking to hurt anyone', it may be beyond their powers to prevent it. As usual, you must respond to questioning pertaining to your actions in the performance of your duties. If questioning see ms to change direction, whereby you feel uncomfortable, cease the interview and call your union representative ASAP. Do NOT repeat hearsay. If you were not at the scene or (even if you were there, but) did not personally witness an occurrence - then don't give a report on it. Repeating a story third hand may be dangerous. If you didn't see it - keep quiet! Back To Top BUNKER KNEE PADS - WEAR THEM OR BE FOREWARNED Both unions are advising their members to make sure that kneepads are properly attached to your bunker pants. Officers have been reminded to ensure that all firefighters under their command comply with Department guidelines. The FDNY administration has stated it's intent to take action against anyone found without any kneepads installed. Engine company recommendation is # 2 or # 3 pads, while ladder company recommendation is # 1 or # 2 pads. Properly attached kneepads are an integral part of your safety/protective gear. Official FDNY Policy Guidelines still allow you to choose which pad to wear. There is no mandatory rule for #2 pads until such time that the administration revises the written policy, after giving us the required 7 days notice. Chiefs in the field can not supercede this contractual process. Any problem, call us. Back To Top HOLY NAME SOCIETY CELEBRATION AT ST.
