FIRE SAFE CIGARETTE ACT The UFA is encouraging firefighters and their families to write to Governor George Pataki’s office in support of the Fire Safe Cigarette Act, Bill # A1162. This bill passed unanimously in both the Assembly and the Senate and would mandate that cigarettes sold in New York State would have to meet reduced ignition propensity standards to be determined by the Office of Fire Prevention and Control. Cigarettes are the single largest cause of fatal fires in New York City, New York State, and the rest of the nation. The Governor’s address; Executive Chambers, State Capitol, Albany, NY 12224. HABITAT FOR HUMANITY - NEW YORK CITY IS LOOKING FOR NEW YORK’S BRAVEST Habitat for Humanity - NYC is one of more that 1,500 United States affiliates of Habitat for Humanity International, an ecumenical, Christian housing ministry that seeks to eliminate poverty housing from the world. They are committed to the development and uplifting of families and communities, not just the construction of homes. This chapter was created in 1983 when New York City was selected as the site of the first Jimmy Carter Work Project and currently builds in the Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan and Queens. Through volunteer labor and tax-deductible donations of money and materials, Habitat builds and rehabilitates simple, decent homes with the help of the future homeowners. Habitat homes are sold to partner families at no profit, financed with affordable, no-interest loans. The homeowners’ monthly mortgage payments are recycled into a revolving Fund for Humanity that is used to build more homes. It is not a giveaway program, but rather a joint venture in which those who benefit from the housing are involved in the work. Habitat welcomes individuals of all faiths to participate in its mission. There is no discrimination based on religion, race, gender or age for any activities associated with this program. The recipients of housing are selected upon need without regard to race or religious preference. The Jimmy Carter Work Project 2000 comes to NYC, the site of the first JCWP. The project will take place during Building on Faith Week, September 11 - 17, 2000, which will witness the construction of 10,000 houses worldwide, the largest housing blitz build ever. Twenty homes will be completed in New York City during that week. A ten-unit building in Central Harlem and an additional ten units in Bed-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn will be taken from sheetrocking to finish during this exciting event. The need for firefighters to participate in Habitat - Most Habitat volunteers have no construction experience and the program needs “House Leaders†(comprehensive knowledge of construction) and “Crew Leaders†(specialized skills to teach and supervise other volunteers). The Jimmy Carter Work Project will require 20 House Leaders and 80 Crew Leaders with skills and experience in the following areas: Steel stud installation, painting, installing kitchens, wood stud installation, finishing trim, ceramic tile, drywall hanging/finishing, hanging doors/hardware, flooring. The UFA is seeking assistance from firefighters to serve as House and Crew Leaders. If you have any of these skills and can give a day of your time to help a family have a home, we urge you to call Habitat at 718-246-5656 ext. 310. It is inspirational and rewarding work.
