MILITARY BUY BACK LEGISLATION
We are pleased to announce that on October 19th Governor George Pataki signed legislation (S8101, A11280) that will provide eligible veterans up to three years of pension credit. Listed below are some of the eligibility guidelines.

• must have been honorably discharged.

• must have at least 5 years of service in the FDNY

• military service must have been during one of the
following periods:
WWII 12/07/41 - 12/31/46
Korean War 06/27/50 - 01/31/55
Vietnam Era 02/28/61 - 05/07/75

• military service during one of the following that was “In
Theater” with receipt of an expeditionary medal:
Lebanon 06/01/83 - 12/01/87
Grenada 10/23/83 - 11/21/83
Panama 12/20/89 - 01/31/90
Desert Storm 08/02/90 - Present
the theater of operations include Iraq, Kuwait, Saudi
Arabia, Bahrain, Qatar, United Arab Emirates, Oman,
Gulf of Aden, Gulf of Oman, Persian Gulf and the Red Sea.

• Effective immediately and retroactive to 12/21/98.

• members who retired on/after 12/21/98 have one year
from the effective date (10/19/00) to apply to the
FDNY Pension Unit for credit.

• active members must make application before the effective date of retirement.

• the cost to purchase this credit will be 3% of your final
12 months total compensation prior to your retirement,
times the number of years being claimed.

• under this law tier shift ie: from Tier II to Tier I is not
permitted

• once this time is purchased it will count toward the 20
years service retirement (up front time.)

• upon retirement member would be entitled to the
Defined Benefit if Military Time was used to obtain 20
years of service (18 years FDNY plus 2 years military
time.)

• upon retirement member would be entitled to the
longevity calculation based on his/her total years of
service and military time (i.e. 23 years FDNY plus 2
years military time results in the 25 years calculation.)

UFA ENDORSES RICK LAZIO FOR US SENATE RUN
After meeting with both candidates the Executive Board has decided to endorse Congressman Rick Lazio in his bid for the US Senate. We are asking our membership to support our friend on election day.

UFA ELECTION DAY OPERATION
On November 7th we are requesting that our members turn out to help those candidates who have been so supportive of our legislative agenda. We will have board members at 7 locations to coordinate our manpower and must have 100% membership participation. TURKEY TROT RUN & STRENGTHALON
The Annual Turkey Trot Run, sponsored by Engine 233/Ladder 176, will be on Tuesday, November 21st at Flushing Meadow Park, Queens (Avery Avenue exit). Start time is 11:30 a.m. and entries accepted up until 11:00 a.m. Pre-entry fee is $15 if received by November 17th and $18 thereafter. FDNY retirees admitted free. UFA PENSION & PRE-RETIREMENT SEMINAR
The next UFA Pension Assistance Seminar by Lou Sforza will be held Wednesday, November 15th, at 7:00 P.M. at the UFA office located at 23rd Street and 3rd Avenue - 4th floor meeting room. Call Debbie Lynch at (212) 683-4832 to register. Street parking is very limited. This seminar should not be confused with the seminar given by the Fire Department which is mandatory prior to retirement. The Fire Department seminar is generously given on a monthly basis and is held at the Fire Department Headquarters in Brooklyn. The seminar given by the UFA is open to all members periodically regardless as to whether they are retiring or not.

UFA HEALTH AND SAFETY SEMINAR
The UFA will conduct a safety and health training session on Wednesday, December 13th and Thursday, December 14th. Similar presentations will be offered each day, so decide which day is best for you and call Jude Gaddis at (212) 545-6965 to register. The seminar will be held at the UFA Building at 204 East 23 Street, fourth floor meeting room. Class will be held from 0900 until 1500 hours. Continental breakfast and lunch will be provided. This full day of training entitles all delegates to the standard excusal time of six hours. Delegates scheduled to work both days (groups 12-13-14) may take advantage of excusal time only once. Arrange your schedule now for a day of significant educational training. Some of the facilitators will be the former FDNY/OSHA coordinator, Tom Galvin and Dr’s. Kelly and Prezant. Mr. Galvin will make a shocking presentation on electricity and how it pertains to you. The doctors will speak to you about your concerns with Hepatitis C and other infectious diseases. A detailed agenda will be forwarded when and if available. Limited street parking and reasonable ($12.00) lots on 24th Street.
