ART SHOW AT FIRE MUSEUM NYFF’s Burn Center’s Annual Art Show to benefit the burn camp for children will be holding its third silent auction at the NYC Fire Museum on Thursday, November 16th, 2000. Once again we are looking for artwork done by members of the FDNY. Last year’s show was a tremendous success and this year should prove to be even better. Please call Firefighter Jim Murray at 212-631-0029 or Firefighter Dan Murray at 212-758-1587 for details about submitting artwork or helping out in the show this year. The discount donation for firefighters is $25 at the door and includes food, drink, music and the opportunity to bid on great artwork produced by our own members or local artists. Don’t miss out - Spring Street between Hudson and Varick. Back To Top GOVERNOR SIGNS DEATH GAMBLE On Tuesday, October 31, 2000 Governor George E. Pataki signed into law our Death Gamble legislation (S.6550-A, A.9547-A). This legislation will provide a lump sum death benefit equal to what the member’s pension would have been at the time of death times the actuarial life span. This amount can easily exceed $500,000. This benefit for Tier II firefighters is effective immediately and is retroactive to July 1, 2000. Our thanks to Governor Pataki, Senator Joe Bruno, Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver, Senator Nick Spano and Assemblyman Eric Vitaliano for the unwavering support. Copies of this legislation can be obtained by calling Mike Carter*s office at 212-545-6978. Back To Top DEATH GAMBLE - HOW IT WORKS As of July 1, 2000, this Tier I death benefit is now available to Tier 2 members. It is paid out to the designated death beneficiary of any member who was eligible to retire for service at the time of death; meaning 20 years of service. The beneficiary will be eligible to receive an amount equal to the reserve for the service retirement allowance which would have been payable had you retired on the day before your death. This actuarial calculation is based on your age and average life expectancy. Any retiree who has NOT had their pension payroll finalized yet and is receiving partial pension checks, is STILL covered under the death gamble provision. This applies to both Tier I and Tier II members.. Back To Top THANKS FOR ALL YOUR HELP! On behalf of Legislative Chairman Mike Carter and the entire UFA Executive Board, I would like to take this opportunity to thank each and every member who turned out on Election Day to volunteer their time to us at the election sites throughout the City. We had a terrific turnout of members and be assured that your presence was greatly appreciated by all the candidates. Thanks for volunteering --we are very successful in most of our endorsements and look forward to looking with our elected officials for the betterment of our members and their families. Thanks for a great job! Back To Top APPARATUS ACCIDENTS & YOUR GIVEN ADDRESS As we have reported, you must give your address as stated on your driver’s license for the FDNY completed MV-104 form. Do NOT confuse this with what you must give in the Police Report. This new rule DOES NOT APPLY TO POLICE REPORTS. Continue to give 9 Metrotech Center, Brooklyn. UFA HEALTH AND SAFETY SEMINAR The UFA will conduct a safety and health training session on Wednesday, December 13th and Thursday, December 14th. Similar presentations will be offered each day, so decide which day is best for you and call Jude Gaddis at (212) 545-6965 to register. The seminar will be held at the UFA Building at 204 East 23 Street, fourth floor meeting room. Class will be held from 0900 until 1500 hours. Continental breakfast and lunch will be provided. This full day of training entitles all delegates to the standard excusal time of six hours. Delegates scheduled to work both days (groups 12-13-14) may take advantage of excusal time only once. Arrange your schedule now for a day of significant educational training. Some of the facilitators will be the former FDNY/OSHA coordinator, Tom Galvin and Dr’s. Kelly and Prezant. Mr. Galvin will make a shocking presentation on electricity and how it pertains to you. The doctors will speak to you about your concerns with Hepatitis C and other infectious diseases. A detailed agenda will be forwarded when and if available. Limited street parking and reasonable ($12.00) lots on 24th Street. Back To Top DIVISION PRINTOUTS - MEDICAL LEAVE, RESPONSE TIME, ETC. Headquarters is circulating printouts to all divisions which contain statistics on each company’s medical leave and a breakdown of response time. Please post notice on all kitchen blackboards or bulletin boards that UFA members are NOT to answer ANY questions about subjects included in these reports. If questioned by anyone (of any rank) you are to have “NO COMMENT†without union representation. This is nothing more than scare tactics, with false conclusions being drawn from blanket statistics having no reality factors in the equation. “NO COMMENTS!â€. 2001 UFA CALENDARS AND VEHICLE ID PLACARDS The 2001 calendars will be distributed to the field some time in December or immediately after January first. The distribution of the vehicle ID placards will be the responsibility of the UFA company delegate. Company bundles will be handed out and signed for. This will occur at both the December 13th and 14th Health & Safety Seminar, and at the January 11, 2001 union meeting. A delegate will always have the right to stop by the union office to pick up his/her bundle at any time (just call Bill Mirro in advance). Back To Top SECOND ANNUAL CIRCUS FAMILY DAY The 2nd Annual Family Day at the Circus is being planned for March 2001. In cooperation with Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey and the Nassau Coliseum, a special show date has been set aside for UFA brothers and sisters and will not be for sale to the general public initially. Seats normally not available due to pre-sale packages are now open exclusively to us. Every seat available has been set aside to go on sale between now and Christmas. Ticket prices range from $10.00 and up, depending on the seat selection. The most meaningful result will be a percentage of proceeds that will go to the UFA WIDOW’S AND CHILDREN’S FUND. To make sure this event runs as smoothly as possible, we are asking for your help and cooperation. Please inform Amy at the UFA office (212) 683-4832 with the name of the one contact person from your company. We will need his/her name, home phone, group number and company to send out an information package. Back To Top REQUEST FOR DONATIONS Kevin Cassidy, N.J.
