Union Issues, Events & Benefits

H.I.P. - MEDICARE TO REMAIN IN SUFFOLK COUNTY
In a last minute turn of events, H.I.P. has decided to reverse it’s decision to pull out of Suffolk County on medicare eligible retirees. We were just notified by H.I.P. President Dan McGowan of the good news. He told us Senator Chuck Schumer was quite instrumental in helping to broker this deal. Regretfully, the pull out in Florida of HIP remains imminent. The City will now be responsible for notification to affected retirees, who have already chosen alternatives. Details have not been worked out yet. DO NOT call the UFA or SBF offices with your inquiries about staying with H.I.P., because we don’t have the answers. Please wait a week before calling N.Y.C. Health Benefits at (212) 306-7760 or 7360.

DELEGATE’S SPECIAL VACATION REQUESTS
All delegates, whether requesting a special vacation split or not, are directed to read page 3 of Section White 7, Delegate’s Manual. This outlines all details concerning your 2001 vacation approval (or possible denial).

UFA PLATINUM VISA CARD IS DROPPED!
First USA Bank has dropped it’s Bravest Visa Card arrangement with the UFA effective December 1, 2000. This was the plan that was to generate money for the pre-1971 UFA retirees. No other details at this time. If applications exist in your firehouse, please discard them. For delegates, disregard the Visa card information in Section Blue 21 of your Delegate’s Manual at this time. We will have to think of another way to generate funds to assist our pre-1971 retirees. More later.

CFR-D TRAINING FOR FIREFIGHTER ELIGIBLES
If you know anyone who has taken Firefighter Exam # 7029, you are aware that all applicants will be required to have CFR-D certification by the date of appointment. Any recertification thereafter is the responsibility of the FDNY (not the member), as per the UFA contract. The UFA does not endorse any particular CFR training center, but does provide contacts for the three locations we are currently aware of. You must ask for the training course covering “Certified First Responder Original” that issues written N.Y. State Certification.
