FDNY’S REQUEST FOR EMT/PARAMEDIC CERTIFICATION INFO = NO RESPONSE
The Bureau of Operations distributed a memo dated January 15th which requests information about EMT or Paramedic certifications which you did not receive from this job. Because the FDNY has absolutely no right demanding this information and did not inform the UFA about this request in advance, it is purely a voluntary issue. The UFA position is that NO MEMBER RESPONDS TO THIS REQUEST (with the exception of probies). This is confidential information that you have every legal right NOT to inform the Department about. In case it comes down to it, you can NOT be ordered to comply with this request. Revisions to the FDNY’s “scope of practice” is a contractual issue subject to mandatory bargaining. Any problem, notify us immediately!

SICK OR HURT? WHEN DO YOU RETURN TO FULL DUTY?
Easy answer - AFTER you have healed and not a minute sooner. It appears that some doctors ask over the telephone if you want the remainder of the tour off while not actually going on medical leave. They may inform you that if you still don’t feel well by your next tour you should go sick. This may honestly seem to them like they are doing you a favor, when in fact this is a dangerous road to take. When you get hurt GO SICK.

PAID 5/74 MINIMUM MANNING OVERTIME BEING VIOLATED
Numerous violations of several sections of this PAID (5/74) have been occurring for quite some time. The grievance procedure went past step III with the Department making no corrections at all. We are now in the middle of arbitration and awaiting hearing dates. Initial papers have been filed by both parties. While this continues, we urge all battalion aides to follow all written policy guidelines. This includes the use of member cards, showing hours worked/offered. No redline restrictions exist for detailing, awaiting relief, or other overtime. Redline restrictions from the computer printout (as stated in the policy) apply only to MMOT. A double asterisk is a redlined member. A single asterisk limits that member to 24 hours of MMOT until the next printout. There are no limits to a member without any asterisk. No other hours or overtime are to be added as a restrictive measure, or you are in violation of written Department policy. If your battalion doesn’t have up to date cards on members, they are violating the policy. We have waited 1

HONOR WOUNDED VETS WITH COMMEMORATIVE STAMP DRIVE
Senator Bill Larkin, a former Army Lieutenant Colonel, has begun a letter writing drive in a campaign to honor Purple Heart recipients with a commemorative stamp. He’s trying to persuade the Postal Service to honor the 1.8 million recipients, half a million of whom are still alive. So far the Postal Service has refused, even though it would go a long way in strengthening veterans’ morale. Last year, the House and Senate passed resolutions which went no further. Larkin will now enlist help from President George W. Bush. Call to Battle - a massive letter writing campaign from the public will force the issue. Write to Virginia Noelke, chairwoman, Citizen’s Stamp Advisory Committee, Room 4474-E, U.S. Postal Stamp Development, 475 L’Enfant Plaza S.W., Washington DC 20260-2347.

THE NEW FDNY FIRE ZONE AT ROCKEFELLER CENTER
The new FDNY FIRE ZONE, opened October 2000 during National Fire Prevention Week, located at Rockefeller Center is a unique interactive fire safety learning center and the first of its kind worldwide. Combining the essence of an actual firehouse with hands-on learning and safety messages aimed at teaching visitors to be fire safe. Capturing the imagination of young and old alike with an actual working fire engine, tools used by field units, and “bunker gear” that can be tried on. Children and adults alike can attach hoses to fire hydrants, climb into the cab of the truck, operate the water pump panel, and interact at the informative kiosks.

Join in the excitement of riding along on a fire engine as it races to the fire and then enter the next area to experience the sites and sounds of the aftermath of a fire. Projected images and theatrical sets tell the stories of how victims survived a fire - what they did to get out alive, but more importantly how they could have prevented the tragedy. A firefighter points out the hazards and instructs the participants to explore their own homes and correct a problem before it becomes a fire.

There is also the official FDNY store offering specially designed FDNY t-shirts, baseball caps, jackets, and more. These are officially licensed FDNY products, and sold exclusively at the Fire Zone. All proceeds go back into the Fire Safety Education Fund to support operation of the Fire Zone and FDNY fire safety programs.

The Fire Zone is located at Rockefeller Center, at 34 West 51st Street between 5th and 6th Avenues. Shows run approximately every 30 minutes and admission is FREE for all FDNY personnel, with ID, and their guests. A 10% discount is also offered on all items purchased in the store. The facility is open Monday through Saturday 9 AM to 9 PM, Sundays and Holidays 11 AM to 5 PM. For general information or to reserve tickets, call 212-698-4520.
