Back To Top CHARITABLE SOLICITATIONS The UFA has received many reports from firefighters and members of the general public of both mail and telephonic solicitations for charities that allegedly benefit families of firefighters injured or killed in the line-of duty. Some solicitations also claim to support educational efforts regarding smoke detectors or camps for children who are burn victims. Once again, we advise you that none of these charities are affiliated with the Uniformed Firefighters Association or the New York City Fire Department. We are extremely doubtful that any significant portion of monies collected by these charities ever reaches the intended beneficiaries. Rather, an inordinate amount of the contributions are skimmed off under the heading of “administrative expensesâ€. Accordingly, we urge you to limit your charitable donations to funds that are directly supported by the UFA, the UFOA, the Fire Department or established Burn Centers. For example, the UFA runs the Widow’s and Children’s Fund and the Thomas Elsasser Fund. These funds provide generous benefits to the widows and families of firefighters injured or killed (both line-of-duty and non-line of duty). Finally, we strongly recommend that you never respond to telephone solicitations for charitable donations of any kind. Please pass this word to all friends, families, and associations you may belong to. Back To Top 2nd ANNUAL CAPTAIN VINCENT G. FOWLER ONE PITCH TOURNAMENT AND FAMILY PICNIC This memorial event will be at Randalls Island on Saturday, April 21st. The tournament begins at 9:30, family picnic at 1:00, and home run derby at 3:00. Last year over 2,000 people and over 80 teams participated. Organizers are looking forward to another great turnout. The Mand Library can be contacted at 212 860-9487. Back To Top PHYSICAL THERAPY THROUGH B.H.S. We do NOT recommend using the facilities at Bennett Ave, Manhattan or Queens Boulevard, Queens, due to their lack of full capability. Back To Top CHECK YOUR DELEGATE MANUAL Some delegates who received a replacement manual for their company may be missing one revised page. Please check Section White 15, Page 1 (not cover page) and verify that it is dated REV. 10/00. If not, call Bill Mirro. Back To Top UFA HEALTH AND SAFETY SEMINAR The UFA will conduct a safety and health training session on Tuesday, March 13th and Wednesday, March 14th. Similar presentations will be offered each day, so decide which day is best for you and call Jude Gaddis at (212) 545-6965 to register. The seminar will be held at the UFA Building at 204 East 23 Street, fourth floor meeting room. Class will be held from 0900 until 1500 hours. Continental breakfast and lunch will be provided. This full day of training has no excusal time for delegates scheduled to work because we are entitled to submit only one meeting per month towards excusal time and we have a general membership meeting on the 8th of March. Arrange your schedule now for a day of significant educational training. Some of the facilitators will be the former FDNY/OSHA coordinator, Tom Galvin and Dr’s. Kelly and Prezant. The doctors will speak to you about your concerns with Hepatitis C and other infectious diseases. A detailed agenda will be forwarded when and if available. Limited street parking and reasonable ($12.00) lots on 24th Street. Back To Top WORLD GAMES The World Games are only three months away. In order to have room arrangements, uniforms and other details finalized, members planning on attending must contact Sports Chairman Ed Burke. Team managers should have their team rosters, room pairings and uniform sizes submitted. Let’s avoid last minute problems. Back To Top RSOT WHILE ON LIGHT DUTY (5 DAYS PER WEEK) All members assigned light duty for longer than 30 consecutive days are entitled to roster staffing overtime. Generally, you must be offered 24 hours per quarter. Your present light duty assignment, no matter where it is or how many days per week you are scheduled, has absolutely no bearing on your guaranteed 24 hours RSOT per quarter. Familiarize yourself with PA/ID 1-90 on the process to follow. Inform your light duty supervisor to notify O.S.A. (office of staffing assignment) and request that your RSOT be scheduled so as not to conflict with your present work chart. Under no circumstances will you be directed to utilize vacation or compensatory time for the purpose of scheduling your overtime. That would violate written FDNY policy and is strictly forbidden!
