COMPANY MEDICALS & OTHER BHS CHANGES
No-Shows at BHS are being checked thoroughly. Any member who is missing from a scheduled appointment, medical, or appearance will get charges for AWOL if there is no legal explanation. Please document all correspondence with BHS employees and any other contact which causes you to postpone or miss an appearance at the medical office. Protect yourself with the appropriate documentation, phone calls or journal entries.

There is a new guideline for time span between company medicals. The old 6 month rule has been replaced with a 9 month period. If you have received a company medical within 9 months, you will not be allowed to report to Metrotech Center on the unit’s scheduled Medical Day. You will be included as part of the staffing manpower pool and detailed to another company. Reporting procedures are the same as for Education Day or RSOT tours. If you are on medical leave and have had your previous annual exam within the 9 month period, DO NOT allow BHS officials to keep you there for another company medical. Explain your situation and give details. It does NOT benefit the members in the field when you take this exam prematurely while on medical leave or light duty.

REPORTING PROCEDURES FOR MEDICAL DAY MANPOWER DETAILS
Are you reporting for work (getting detailed) or RSOT while your company is OOS for Medical Day? In either category, you will be detailed out to another unit for the 9 X 6 tour. Do not telephone anyone to find out where you are working. You can not be ordered to call in. You can not be ordered by anyone calling you via telephone to report to a work location. The ONLY notification that is legally acceptable is if you are told while actually on duty, during a previous tour, where you must report for your detail or RSOT 9 X 6 tour. If that is done, you shall report there by 0900 hours. Do not concern yourself if the detail might change. Continue to report to where you were instructed while on duty (prior tour). If this legal notification is not accomplished, report to your assigned firehouse by 0900 hours. At 0900 hours, when you are on duty, you will find out where your work assignment is - get directions - gather your gear - and begin your travel. Somebody will be earning the appropriate awaiting relief money. Any problem, contact your trustee as an emergency.

WNBC’s THIRD WATCH SUPPORTS THOMAS ELSASSER FUND
This popular television series made us an offer we could not refuse. They were looking for a number of our members to volunteer their time to work as extras on a special episode. In return, they promised to make a donation with the savings generated to the non line of duty Thomas Elsasser Fund. The producers just handed over a donation check for a whopping $12,500 ! Volunteers from every borough enjoyed a great experience, but we would like to extend our thanks and praise for their time and excellent work. Charity work is the most worthwhile time you could possibly spend.
