Contents: FIRE MARSHAL REPRESENTATIVE ELECTION After receipt of official certification from American Arbitration Association of the results of the election to Fire Marshal Representative, which was counted on Friday, June 15th, the following is the official tabulation: 180 ballots mailed - 161 ballots returned 2 ballots voided for no I.D. = 159 votes counted 80 votes needed to win without a runoff * EDWARD BURKE (Bronx Base) = 92 votes John Holohan (Queens Base) = 44 votes Edwin Gordon (Manhattan Base) = 23 votes Congratulations to the winner, incumbent Ed Burke, who will continue to serve in his present capacity for another three year term - expiring July 31, 2004. Back To Top DRUG CARVE-OUT (PICA) CARD We are pleased to announce a new benefit for all active and non medicare retired members and their families beginning July 2, 2001. Called the Prescription Carve-out (PICA) Plan, a special card will be issued to cover psychotropic, injectable, chemotherapy and asthma medications. Many of the drugs covered by this plan are among the most expensive and include, for example, medications for Multiple Sclerosis and Hepatitis C. This program will provide covered medications no matter what health plan you belong to. Currently, some of this coverage may have been provided by some, but not all plans. This will supercede any coverage the SBF may or may not have provided. Co-payments will be $0 for generic and very low for brand name. Complete details are being mailed to all homes. Back To Top FREE BLOOD LETTING On Friday, June 29th, 2001, the New York City Firefighters of Putnam and Northern Westchester will be hosting our semi-annual Blood Drive. The Blood Drive will take place at the Daniel O’Brian V.F.W. Hall, located at Gleneida Ave (Rt. 52), Carmel, New York (between Putnam Motors and Drew Methodist Church), from 2:30 until 8:00 p.m. There will be food and refreshments. All those who can, are encouraged to give us a pint. Blood supplies are at a crisis level. Walk-ins are welcome. Back To Top FDNY vs. NYPD ANNUAL GAELIC FOOTBALL GAME -RESCHEDULED This year’s annual Battle of the Badges is being held in honor of Firefighters Franklin (L-44), Kerr (E-90) and McLoughlin (E-302). It will be held on Friday evening, June 29th at 6:00 p.m. Turn out to Gaelic Park - 240th Street and Broadway, Bronx. All proceeds are donated to both FD and PD charities. Proceeds will help defray mounting hospital bills and rehabilitation costs. Back To Top RESCHEDULED JUNE UNION MEETING TO COINCIDE WITH CONTRACT UPDATE The canceled June 22nd union meeting will be rescheduled for a later date, pending any progress (or total breakdown) of collective bargaining talks. Negotiations are continuing, so when valuable information becomes available for dissemination we will notify all delegates/members of a meeting date via the usual notification process. Back To Top LOOKING FOR NEW YORK CITY’S BEST OF THE BRAVEST MILKSHAKE Can you make a damn good milkshake? Have a unique or old family shake recipe? Or how about a low fat or health milkshake? If so, the American Dairy Association together with the Thomas Elsasser Fund wants to know your secret. The Dairy Association is sponsoring New York Milkshake Month in August and to mark the occasion has created a contest open only to members of the FDNY. Five finalists will be selected based on the recipe they submit to this contest. Each finalist will win a dinner for four at Manhattan’s Comfort Diner. The grand-prize winner will receive a $5,000 donation in their name to the Thomas Elsasser Widows and Children’s Fund; their recipe will be featured as “Milkshake of the Day†at the Comfort Diner, and will get a year’s supply of milk for their firehouse. Finalist must be available to compete in a Shake-Off on Tuesday, August 7 at 10 a.m. in Midtown. There will be about 600 paralyzed veterans arriving at LaGuardia Airport on June 30. We need as many volunteers as possible to help the athletes off the planes and onto buses for the trip to the Marriott Hotel. We would like to have three 6-hour teams set up for their arrival on June 30 and departure on July 6. There is also a need for volunteers during the games at various locations. The listed events are on the back of the volunteer forms that are being sent to every firehouse. AUGUSTINE HIGH SCHOOL REUNION - CLASSES 1932 THROUGH 1969 The school closed in 1969 and alumni are now planning a reunion for October 20, 2001. There is scheduled St. Augustine High School Reunion Dinner at Bishop Loughlin High School on Saturday, October 20, 2001. This will cover all the graduates from 1936 through 1969.
