MICHAEL BLOOMBERG COMMENTS ON JOB SAFETY
On June 28th the NY Daily News ran a story “Bloomberg Says ... Sanit Work’s Riskier Than Cops, Fire Jobs.” Immediately after the article hit, Bloomberg reached out to the UFA to explain how a reporter had taken his comments out of context and to reconfirm his long-term commitment to our firefighters and widows fund. WORK HOURS & OT - ROTATION FIREFIGHTERS & “14 WEEK” PROBIES
A similar situation occurs whether you are a 14 week proby returning to Randall’s Island or a firefighter returning to your assigned firehouse at rotation’s end. Depending on what group (1 - 25) you worked in and what your new work schedule is, the contractual right is for working no more than 144 hours per 25 day cycle. Have your officer verify the cycle days and hours worked (scheduled). If for any reason, any member exceeds the 144 hours during the cycle, that firefighter would receive overtime for the additional hours. Do not refuse to work; simply get paid the appropriate overtime. FDNY Operations is aware of the contractual right.

FDNY HOCKEY TEAM’S “TEDDY BEARS FOR TYKES”
The New York City Firefighter’s Hockey Team and Firefighter Ministries established the Teddy Bears for Tykes Program in February 2001. Our program seeks to provide teddy bears to children who have been affected by trauma. By providing a child with a teddy bear, we hope to provide comfort during times of duress. Through donations from individuals, firehouses, organizations, corporations and through fundraising events, we are donating teddy bears to the following children: children who have been burned, children whose parents have been injured or died in the line of duty, children whose home has been destroyed because of a fire or other disaster.

The program officially kicked-off in New York City with our first donation being made at the FDNY Widow’s and Children’s Ice Skating Event. Teddy bears are being distributed nationally through our program to children, burn centers and burn camps. Since our kick-off over 400 teddy bears have been distributed to children in 16 states.

The Teddy Bears for Tykes Program can be summarized in the statement, “TO HELP BRING A SMILE TO A CHILD’S FACE”. Through our teddy bears we hope to comfort children and to help lessen the anxiety of those that are experiencing loss, injury, or grief. For more information on our program or to make a donation, visit our website at: http://www.teddybearsfortykes.com. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Steve Doyle at 1-888-925-4028.

ALAN HEVESI FUNDRAISER AT UFA OFFICE
The Executive Board is hosting a fund raising event for Comptroller Hevesi on Wednesday, July 11th at the UFA Headquarters - 5:00 p.m. Our goal here is not only to introduce Alan to the delegate body, but also to allow our members to meet him personally. Your participation in such an event is important and I hope you can join us. All company delegates, or their designees, are invited to attend.

Getting Alan elected would mean a great deal to firefighters. It is important that we support him in every way possible. As such, we would like to suggest each company make an effort to make a donation directly to the Friends of Hevesi Committee. If you are unable to attend, please make arrangements to send a representative from your company. Please RSVP to Debbie Lynch at 212-545-6978.
