PROGRAM STALLS ON FIREFIGHTERS Senator Chuck Schumer has run into a political brick wall which has put a hold on firefighters nationwide taking advantage of the Officer Next Door Program. The program he announced was to be on line for our members as of August 1st, but technical and legal problems at HUD have suddenly prevented this. The Senator’s office will keep us informed as to his continued progress. He is sorry for any inconvenience. Back To Top UFA SUCCESSFUL IN FIRST STAGE OF LITIGATION CHALLENGING SPECIAL PROMOTIONAL LIST FOR HIRING FIREFIGHTERS We are pleased to report that Judge Jane S. Solomon of the Supreme Court, New York County, has issued a preliminary injunction prohibiting the City from hiring any additional candidates from the special promotional list established by Exam # 7514 pending the outcome of the proceeding for which we seek a permanent injunction. As you may recall, the UFA had challenged use of that list for hiring any candidates who received a score less than 95. The City had moved to dismiss our Petition on various procedural grounds. Judge Solomon rejected all challenges by the City and found that based upon the papers before her, we would likely succeed in the underlying action. A further conference on this matter before the Court will take place in October 2001. The significance of this decision is that it will hopefully prevent the City from attempting another “promotional†scheme that results in the hiring of candidates who score well below the traditional cut-off score on open competitive examinations. While the UFA is certainly not opposed to an increase in minority membership in the Fire Department, we believe the scheme that was utilized with Exam # 7514 unreasonably jeopardizes the high standard required by the merit and fitness rule governing Civil Service examinations. Back To Top HANDI-TALKIE RADIO TESTING AT RANDALL’S ISLAND The Department will begin testing radios at the Rock by utilizing companies during mock emergency situations. Both the UFA and UFOA are in agreement that evaluations to improve communications is a positive direction to take. After discussions with the Citywide Tour Commander in charge of this project, Chief Sal Casano, a compromise was reached where our members do not have to print their names or sign any evaluation forms. You will be asked to give your company and riding position. Our thanks to Chief Casano for his assistance and inclusion of union recommendations.
