Union Issues, Events & Benefits

REACH OUT TO RETIREES
All companies should reach out to their retired members for assisting with a uniformed presence at all wakes and funerals. Due to the multiple services taking place every day, our active membership has been thinner than normal. This is where our retirees are needed most and can certainly shine in typical FDNY tradition. Because service information is slow to be publicized by the media, call your retirees who live in the region of the funeral mass. Even if they do not have a uniform, tell them to line up in the street with the rest of the brothers and sisters - NOT on the sidewalk like civilians. Thanks!

CD-73's NOT NECESSARY
All members who were on active payroll as of September 11th are automatically covered without filing any CD-73 for exposures.

SAFETY ALERT
Use one set of bunker gear for work at the site and keep the second set for work from the firehouse. Keep a large plastic bag in your car to contain your bunker gear used at the site. Respirators and gloves are available at the site, please use them! Coveralls have been issued and a new supply is on the way. Most of you have been extremely involved in the rescue operation with little or no concern for yourselves. Thank you for understanding that we are doing all we can at this time.

COMPANY CLOSING ON DAY OF FUNERAL
On the day of a line-of-duty funeral, the affected company is closed for the day. If that company is quartered in a double house, only the company hosting the funeral is closed. The other unit must remain open, but can be staffed by all volunteers. If there are funerals on the same day for both units, then both units will close. Surrounding companies or distant companies should call with volunteer names.

JOINT COUNSELING SERVICES - FDNY & IAFF
A joint project has been put together by both the IAFF and FDNY Counseling Unit. The IAFF has come into New York City and provided the UFA/UFOA with anything we have asked for. One of those items is Crisis Debriefing Teams. They have brought several crack teams from around the country into New York and are at our disposal for as long as we want. The counseling will be provided in a 4 tier system.

  1. Rehab counselors are set up at the scene. Just ask for them.
  2. Professional counselors will visit every firehouse, the priority being units with deceased or missing members. Also, where companies have members with missing relatives.
  3. Additional counseling to take place at the Counseling Unit (Ladder 20's quarters on Lafayette St, Manhattan) or BHS (at headquarters). You can go either on your own, or if you’ve been directed from the field.
  4. Counseling centers will be set up in Staten Island, Manhattan, Goshen, and Fort Totten for any member or family wishing to attend.
