Firehouse Interviews & Closing Of Safety Battalion In lieu of maintaining open our one Safety Operating Battalion, Commissioner Von Essen saw fit to utilize these chiefs in conducting historical interviews with members in the field. This unit was closed illegally. We agree with the UFOA that this is irresponsible and dangerous. These are NOT safety interviews, nor are they fatal fire interviews. It is a voluntary program, therefore you do not have to participate. We feel that it is imperative to return the Safety Battalion to regular active status. Allowing the “book writing†project to successfully proceed will only hinder the active return of this much needed unit. Purely from a firefighter safety point of view, it makes no sense to voluntarily participate with this headquarter’s project. Besides, it may be mentally harmful to speak about your experiences without a crisis counselor present. It would be much wiser to attend crisis debriefing counseling - an important factor which is being grossly overlooked by the FDNY membership. If the information collection team reverts to a committee of light duty personnel and the Safety Operating Battalion is back on-line, then we must re-examine the situation. Problem one is resolved, but the counseling issue would remain. That will be for the medical professionals to decide. (Call the UFOA hotline at 212-843-8362). Back To Top Free Family Portrait Sears has offered one free 8 X 10 family portrait to all firefighters in the FDNY. Simply show identification, and you and your immediate family will be entitled to a complimentary portrait; no additional fees will be added. Contact your local Sears portrait studio for more specific details. There is one important fact: Sears Portrait Studios requests that folks call for an appointment and not walk in unannounced. Sears prefers that fire department members wear their uniform for the portrait. Apparently, they have an American Flag background that they use for this portrait. If you elect to take advantage of this very nice offer, remember it is at their discretion. Accordingly, you do not have a lot of options on what you will have in the portrait. This is a set pattern deal. REMEMBER: Call for an appointment and thank them. Keep any tension between agencies to a minimum. If there is any problem, bring it to the chief’s attention and let those in charge work it out. There should now be a sharing of responsibility in each sector. On a different note, don’t volunteer for this detail if you don’t really want to be there.
