7 Online - July 08, 2011Eyewitness News BROOKLYN (WABC) -- A man and woman were rescued from a fire that burned through their Brooklyn apartment early Thursday.
The blaze broke out inside their fifth floor apartment on East 21st Street just before 6 a.m.
Both victims were overcome by smoke when firefighters climbed a tower ladder and entered through the window.
A 71-year-old man was found passed out on the floor, and a 69-year-old woman was in the bedroom in cardiac arrest. Firefighters had to fight through the fire, which was blocking their access to the victims. They brought them back out through the flames and to street level.
The cause of the fire is under investigation, but is not suspicious. The apartment is not believed to have a working smoke alarm.
The woman was rushed to Kings County Hospital and the man to SUNY Downstate Medical Center. They were then both moved to Jacobi Medical Center for further treatment in the hyperbaric chamber.
