1010 Wins - May 11, 2011
by Al JonesThe blaze occurred at a six-story building, located at 595 E. 167th Street in the Morrisania section. One firefighter and three civilians were taken to the hospital for smoke inhalation. Seven firefighters were also treated for exhaustion.
Al Jones of 1010 WINS spoke with one resident named James who said he was able to make a quick escape.
"One of our neighbors rang the door bell that there is a fire in the building," he said. His apartment suffered some water damage, but he credits firefighters with saving the building and ensuring the situation didn't get any worse. Deputy Fire Chief James Nichols said the blaze was "very tough" to fight because it was "mostly confined to the top floor...of the building."
There is no word yet on what started the blaze.
