Back To Top Cornell Workplace Study Begins The Cornell University Traumatic Stress, Workplace Conditions and Well-being Study is now being conducted in the field. In order to improve firehouse conditions, training, equipment, management and the overall health and safety of our membership, we need concrete data detailing the inadequacies in the FDNY. If your company has been chosen, we need 100% participation in order for us to ensure that it will be an effective tool for both us and you. Back To Top UFA Response to Proposed Closings & Cuts In each instance where the Department has attempted to reduce staffing or close companies, theUFAresponse has been immediate, decisive -- and well documented. This includes utilizing the courts, arbitration, press conferences, media blitzes, rallies, posters, paid advertising campaigns, negotiating with and pressuring City Hall, working with the IAFF, City Council,Albanyand inWashington,DC. But of key importance is our support for local community efforts in their fights to keep firehouses in their neighborhoods open, which is the only true way to combat company closings. We applaud all efforts put forth by those companies and communities targeted by the City and are sad that only two companies were saved as a result of those efforts. Our fight will continue. A folder which contains documentation for much of the above was given to each Company Delegate at the June 12UnionMeeting, though it is by no means all-inclusive. All company members should have the opportunity to look at this package. It goes a long way toward dispelling any inaccuracies that are spun in the media or spread by the misinformed. Back To Top Safe Response After Company Closings Due to firehouse closings, more companies will be responding from farther away. Please remember to operate as safely as you possibly can--and never forget--don't get injured speeding to an alarm. Follow all Department procedures when responding. You are unable to help others if you are involved in an accident. Slow down. We didn't start the fire, but when we get there we will put it out. STAY SAFE! Back To Top 10-14 Still Required for Safety Despite the new 2 Engine response protocol for single source reports of structural fires, it is still critical for public and firefighter safety that a 10-14 signal be given on the teleprinter when acknowledging an alarm. Back To Top Contract The Governor resigned the PERB provisions of the Taylor Law unchanged. He had previously sought to change the law to favor municipalities by making ability to pay a mandatory provision in arbitration, which now cannot happen for at least another two years. This is a big victory for labor and will assist in UFA leverage during contract negotiations with the City, which has repeatedly refused to negotiate with the UFA to date, despite numerous formal requests. The UFA will keep you informed of any progress on this very important matter. Back To Top FDNY Memorial at World Police & Fire Games in Spain... ...needs your help.
