Events, Help, Fundraisers & Benefits: September Union Meeting Date Confirmation September’s union meeting is now confirmed as scheduled for Tuesday, September 16th at10 am at the JFK Ramada. The September 11th anniversary falls on the second Thursday of September this year and therefore conflicts with the normal Thursday schedule. Sept. 16th is noted on theUFA calendar as tentative. Please insure you note the change that it is now a confirmed date. Battalion Delegate Meeting re Next Contract / Major Issuess Battalion Delegates were previously notified by mail that a Battalion Delegate meeting will take place on Wednesday, September 3rd at10 am, at the UFA to discuss the next contract and a variety of major issues affecting the membership. Company Delegates should contact their Battalion Delegates with questions or concerns prior to the meeting. If the Battalion Delegate cannot attend for some extremely important reason, try to send the next most knowledgeable Delegate from your battalion. There will be no meeting excusal time granted. Back To Top Your Role in Effective Political Action Politically active unions are most effective in having elected officials to support their issues. The most important way to support candidates is to have a pool of available members help them in their election campaigns. Political and legislative accomplishments benefit all firefighters, and the efforts must be shared by all. The Executive Board is asking each Company Delegate to assign members on a rotating basis by keeping a company roster check-off list for assigning members to political events when the UFA needs bodies. You can go by seniority or any other method your company chooses. The important thing is that when the UFA asks your company for a member, you can provide it--and for the next event provide someone else. It is unfair that the same guys step up all the time. This will insure we have the number of bodies we need for any given event and will also prevent unnecessary appearances. For example, quite often we only need 20 or 30 members. Putting out a 65-2 request is not practical for every event of this type, but if we ask 20 companies to provide a member each time, you will be asked to appear fewer times and at the same time insure a more productive turn-out. The latest political events are noted on 65-2 #50 which was faxed and emailed on 8/25. We are working to put an FDNY member into City Council by having each company provide a member for phone banks and poll watching. Help change your futures as firefighters! Back To Top Help Us to Help You!!! Fill Out the Survey ASAP! Give us the ammo! In order to improve firehouse conditions, training, equipment, management and the overall health and safety of our membership, concrete data is required in order to detail the inadequacies in the FDNY. The early results from the survey that have been returned are providing powerful data that will help us address the issues that affect FFs daily. However, it is absolutely necessary to have a higher return rate in order to validate the survey results--which by academic standards will allow the info to withstand the most detailed of scrutiny. Yes, it will take a little over an hour of your valuable time to fill out. The UFA is asking each and every member of selected companies to step up, play your part and follow through. TheUFAcan only accomplish what you empower us to do. It’s your future. Do the right thing, please! Back To Top Daily Teleprinter Notices of Companies Out of Service As a result of a UFA request during Labor-Management discussions earlier this summer, the Dept has recently started sending teleprinter notices to each firehouse at the beginning of each tour listing which companies are scheduled to be out of service for training, etc. Please insure that you are aware of this important information at the beginning of each shift. Back To Top Were You Denied OT for 5th Grade Medical? Currently the Dept is not paying members for attending mandatory 5th grade medicals. TheUFAis pursuing a grievance through arbitration in order to correct this. Any member who was denied OT that was requested on his/her TPR is requested to fax this info to theUFAat 212-683-4359 ASAP, attn: Joe Miccio, Recording Secretary. This info is extremely important to help us win the case. Back To Top New UFA Retiree Liaison The UFA has recently hired James Dahl as an on-staff retiree liaison. Jim retired in September 2002, after working for over 32 years in Ladder 59. He was a Company Delegate for 25 years and a Battalion Delegate for 15 years. As liaison, Jim will be working with the UFA Executive Board and the SBF office in an effort to help better understand and more effectively address many important retiree issues and concerns. Jim will be here solely to serve our retirees, and he will be in the UFA office Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 9 am to 4 pm. Back To Top Company Trained Chauffeurs The UFA has met with the Department several times in Labor-Management meetings in an attempt to resolve the problem of members being assigned to drive apparatus who are not properly trained by the Department at chauffeur school. This includes Foam Units, Thawing apparatus and other special vehicles. The Department has indicated to theUFAthat it will take additional steps to address this situation. Firefighters who have not been ‘school trained’ must insure they protect themselves from being held liable. All members that are not ‘school trained’ should not operate an apparatus unless ordered by an officer. The UFA is directing any firefighter that is not ‘school trained’ who is ordered to drive an apparatus in other than an emergency situation occurring during a tour, and beyond the control of the Department, to record the following statement in the company journal: “I have this day and hour been ordered by (OFFICER’S NAME) to operate an apparatus. I feel that I have not been properly trained to do so.†Back To Top UFAScholarship Fund Applications Available online at theUFAwebsite, downloaded and returned by fax or mail.
